Why "The 412"?
In addition to the local area code, The 412 (pronounced "the four-one-two") refers to 1 Timothy 4:12, which reads:
Let no one have contempt for your youth, but set an example for those
who believe, in speech, conduct, love, faith, and purity.
The mission of The 412: St. Teresa's Youth Ministry is to lead the young people of the parish into deeper relationship with Jesus Christ and His Holy Catholic Church through dynamic worship, service, and catechesis. The 412 provides space for youth to experience the unconditional love of Jesus Christ and the call to be His hands and feet to the local community and the entire world.
The vision of The 412 is:
1. To be a place of refuge by creating and maintaining a safe space for youth to gather for activities, events, and programs.
2. To build a strong community of young, faithful disciples by offering several retreats, social events, and youth-focused liturgies each year, as well as regular weekly gatherings, Scripture studies, and small groups.
3. To encourage the youth population of St. Teresa to be a distinctly Catholic, Eucharistic people by engaging youth in catechetical and liturgical activities which encourage them to love the Catholic Church and profess through words and actions her foundational beliefs and teachings.
4. To call forth young servant leaders by providing frequent opportunities for the youth of St. Teresa to serve their local, regional, national, and international community according to the seven principles of Catholic Social Teaching.
5. To strengthen parish-wide investment and involvement in the youth of the community by empowering, training, and sustaining adult volunteers to be role models and examples of Christian disciples through ongoing formation and spiritual support.
Mission
Life Nights are held every Sunday from 6-8pm in the youth room. A typical Life Night will include activities, games, a talk, and a small group discussion based around a certain topic.
The theme for the Fall 2010 semester is "iGod: A New Generation of Disciples." We'll be looking at Christian discipleship and how we can live out the Gospel in our everyday lives.
While Life Nights are built into a semester theme, the sessions can also stand on their own. So come once, or come every week--you're always welcome!
S.O.S. (Service on Saturday) is an opportunity to do a service project on the first Saturday of the month.
We work with various organizations throughout the local community to serve those less fortunate or in need of some type of assistance. Past S.O.S. activities have included playing Bingo with the residents at Marian Hall Home (assisted living facility), serving a meal at Jubilee Soup Kitchen, and doing yard work for the Benedictine Sisters of Pittsburgh.
S.O.S. can be used for school service hours, as long as you bring along the forms!
Face-to-Face is usually held on the first Thursday of each month in the Daily Mass Chapel from 4:30-5:00pm. It is a time to experience Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament using praise and worship music and some kind of group prayer/reflection.
Come by yourself, bring your friends, or come with your family--all are welcome to spend time giving thanks to God in the Blessed Sacrament!
BYOBible is a weekly Bible study held in the youth room (day and time TBA). This semester, we will be exploring the parables of Jesus and what they mean for us in today's world. Bring a Bible or borrow one of ours, but get ready to dive into God's word like never before!
The 2010 Fall Retreat will be held November 19-21. Spend a weekend away from the hustle and bustle of your busy life, and get ready for the experience of a lifetime.
The weekend will include plenty of great food, engaging talks, awesome prayer, games, fun, and new friends. You won't want to miss out on this unforgettable weekend!
The Youth Advisory Board (YAB) meets for pizza and discussion at 4:30pm on the second Sunday of each month. The YAB is open to any 9-12th graders who are interested in taking on a leadership role in the youth ministry program, or who simply want to voice any opinions, suggestions, or questions about youth ministry at St. Teresa's. The YAB will also work together to plan one Life Night per semester.
